Who are North Tyneside Steelband?

Founded in 1989, North Tyneside Steelband are one of the oldest bands in the North East and perform nationally and internationally at official, corporate and private functions.

The band is a charity with the aim of advancing the abilities of children, young people and adults alike in the art of steel pan. The band would not be able to operate without kind donations for performances and busking, which allow the band to teach and promote carribean music to people across the North East.

How many bands do you have?

North Tyneside Steelband operates 3 bands.

Performance Band are our main band who you’ll often see performing in around the North East and beyond. The Performance Band has been running for over 30 years and is available for weddings, private functions, public events and more. The band practices weekly on a Tuesday and is run by 3 members of our Musical Direction Team, Michael, Jenny and Matthew.

Training band are the youngest with players aged from 7 to 14. They practice once a week on a Wednesday with experienced steel pan tutors from Performance Band. Training band also perform at AGMs and small performances. Many of the Performance Band players graduated from Training Band.

Precious Metal are our adult band with players of all ages over 18. The band meets weekly on a Wednesday and is run by Karina, an experienced player who has played steel pan for over 30 years.

How can I get involved?

North Tyneside Steelband are always looking for enthusiastic new members who would like to learn the exciting steel pan.

The band regularly runs workshops so you can come, get a feel for the instrument and see if it’s right for you. Keep an eye on our social media and website for dates, or sign up to our mailing list and we’ll let you know.
